A young woman who had been excessively controlled and judged by her family had been seeing me for a couple of months. More often than not, she sat her chair looking terrified and barely spoke. We weren’t making the kind of connection that needed to be in place for emerging trust on her part and subsequent growth. I heard about “Do Tell” from a friend and bought it on-line. When my client came to her next session, I was prepared: I had pulled out some cards that were non-threatening and fun (this woman really needed to learn the value of fun). I suggested that we both pull cards. I went first, revealing something about myself. Then she pulled one. She checked my every reaction to see if she was being judged.

We did this for a few sessions and voila! At last, she began to relax—she was having fun with an adult for the first time in her life! By the fourth session, we had made the critical connection and her journey back to wholeness began. I continue to use “Do Tell” in my work with clients, using cards that are appropriate to their needs. I’ve also spread the word to other therapists who are using this wonderful game in their practices. I’ve gotten so much out of “Do Tell” professionally that now I have my own personal copy. Thanks, “Do Tell!”  submitted by JH

  1. [...] A Therapist talks about a new family relationship tool Posted on July 15, 2010 by dotellthegame This article talks about how a therapist incorporated a commercially available Family Game into her office and played it with couples.  When they left they could buy it on Amazon.com.  Shocking result was that the families could continue the therapy work of ‘communicating with each other and the children’ on Family Game night.  A real winner for everyone.  http://dotellthegame.com/blog/tools-for-therapists/a-therapist-speaks-of-how-do-tell-works-in-her-pr...
