You may have heard the saying:
“They look at the world through rose colored glasses.”
Usually it’s not exactly meant as a compliment. It might even be a criticism, but here at Do Tell: The Relationship Game, we don’t think it should be. Think about it. If you look at the world through rose colored glasses, you’re probably going to have a rose colored world.
This month we’ve been talking about appreciation. Appreciation is one of the most potent tools we have.
Your first reaction may be that appreciation is about saying thank you. That is a part of it, but really it’s more like FEELING thank you. That feeling of being appreciative or thankful for something is what alters our perspective on the world around us. You may have to learn to appreciate things. Work to appreciate things. Saying Thank You to a person or to the higher power is just the first step.
When you develop an attitude of appreciation towards the world you’ll find yourself changing, and the world around you will be a bit rosier. We guarantee it.
It’s when we deliberately look for something positive, something to appreciate about a difficult circumstance that we change things within us. WE actually change the neural patterning that we have going around in our brains. When you expect a situation to be bad or miserable, you’re often going to get that, because that’s what you can see through the lens you are looking through. So, be proactive about it. A rose colored world sounds a heck of a lot better than what many of us are used to seeing.
What color are your glasses? Are they grey? Are they brown? Why not choose Rose? Or Yellow, or Orange? Whatever color gives you energy and makes you see things in a softer way.
Here’s a little exercise for you: It’s summertime, or will be soon. The sun is coming. So, go out and actually get yourself a pair of new sunglasses. You probably need a new pair anyway. (Put it on the therapy line of your budget.) Make them your “rose colored world” glasses. They don’t have to actually be a funky color, although that might help. Just choose some new sunglasses that you like. That make you feel good about yourself.
Now, every time you put on those glasses, think, “I’m going to appreciate what I see.” It will be a secret exercise and a reminder to yourself as you walk around town, run on your errands, or otherwise travel through your day to practice appreciation. It will help you connect to others and build a new relationships.
When you focus on your rose colored world, you will find the world will deliver roses. Get those glasses today and start feeling the potent difference appreciation can bring to your life.
