With apologies to Monty Python – - let’s talk fun.

We talked about Norman Cousins last week and how he laughed himself healthy. He called laughter “inner jogging,” which might sound somewhat appealing to those who already like to exercise. If you think it sounds like more work than fun, then we have a different idea for you… a fun challenge.

Sometimes having fun is just a matter of breaking your habits and doing things differently. Isn’t that why vacations work? We get out of our old tired habits and have an excuse to be different.

Do Tell author Kathy Jacobson suggests a “Fun Challenge.” That’s right, we’re challenging you to do something wacky and tell us about it. And we mean wacky. You can get out some of your Do Tell cards for some ideas, or you if you don’t have them handy, try these ideas.

  1. Start laughing in a group of people and watch how many other people laugh too: fits of laughter, just like smiles are contagious. There doesn’t have to be anything funny really, just act like you’ve heard the best joke ever and see what happens.
  2. Pretend to not understand English when someone talks to you: this one can be so much fun that we challenge you to get through the act without cracking up.  Bet you can’t.
  3. Roll down a grassy hill: You probably haven’t tried this one since you were a kid. But why not? Just lay yourself perpendicular to the down grade. Tuck your arms in. Stretch your legs our straight and let gravity do the work.
  4. Thumb-wrestle someone: It was so cool to do when you were a kid. It doesn’t hurt and it might make you giggle.

When the Monty Python players said, “And now for something completely different…” you knew there was some wacky fun on the way. So, come up with your own wacky ideas. We want to hear from you. We challenge you to have fun this week.
