A Belly Laugh will do you good

When was the last time you had a good belly laugh? You know, one of those kind of laughs that you can’t stop, where you laugh so hard and so long you forgot what you started laughing about? The tears start rolling down your cheeks because you are laughing so hard you can’t breathe. Even after the initial laughter stops, you find yourself giggling and chuckling to yourself all day long. Do you remember it? Has it been a while?

Just in case is HAS been a while for you, which is often the case for us “reasonable” level headed adults, take a look at this, and remember what it can be like.

While, unfortunately, most of our own laughter doesn’t literally get us floating towards the ceiling. It definitely lifts our spirits so we feel that way. The life Mary Poppins taught how to live includes the ability to see the hilarity of our day. Chores aren’t a chore when you do them with “A Spoon full of Sugar” and at the end of the day, even when you feel like you’ve lost it all if you can say, “Let’s go fly a kite,” you are closer to living your purpose than any of your level headed pursuits may have gotten you.

Our purpose is to feel joy. If you don’t have children, chances are you haven’t taken a moment to watch Mary Poppins in quite a while. You may remember her fondly, or never heard of her at all, her philosophy is one that can help us all. Life is funny. It’s funny that a nanny comes flying in on an umbrella. It’s funny that a room cleans itself and it’s funny to say a funny word like “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”

Children are really good at laughing. As adults we tend to forget how important it is.

Life is funny, and if we can’t laugh at ourselves, we’re kind of doomed.

Maybe Mary Poppins isn’t your thing, but movies are a great way for us to laugh. We have built laughter into Do Tell: The Relationship Game. A lot of the “Do” cards are designed to leave you laughing. Imagine your brother, mother, daughter or friend doing one of these things:

Do: Be the circus trainer of a ferocious lion.

Do: You’re at a restaurant and go to the bathroom. When you try to get out of the stall, the door won’t open. Demonstrate what you do.

Do: Dance the cancan. Get other to dance too. All who do, including you, move ahead 1 space.

Do you think your father would dance the cancan if it meant he might get to move ahead one space? Maybe he would, and maybe it would be so funny you couldn’t stop laughing.

Advice for today, find something to laugh about. And when you start, don’t stop. You’ll feel your energy and your spirit soar, and might find yourself humming some song Mary Poppins would love.
