Have you ever taken time to practice thinking about the things you want in your life? Most of us want to get good things into our lives, but many struggle with how to do it. You’ve heard the line, “What we think about is what we get, right? Well, it’s so true.
Here’s a clue to getting what you want. Change your life by changing your habit of thinking.
It is just like brushing your teeth. You probably have no problem getting up in the morning and brushing your teeth or washing your face. Those good hygiene habits have been ingrained in us for a pretty long time. It is our habit to brush our teeth, and it’s good for us too.
Unfortunately, the way we think tends to kind of run on its own. We don’t pay attention to it, or don’t deliberately choose what we think about, and sometimes it causes us to end up in a pretty difficult state if mind.
So, make your thought life a practice, and remember to practice it every day.
The more we become conscious about how we think, the easier it will be to change a habit. Here are two ideas for how to practice capturing your thoughts.
- Night-time download: At the end of the night when you’re in bed, before you go to sleep, stop to think about all the great things that happened through the day. Don’t let any of those negative thoughts or hard moments pop into your brain. If those negative thoughts pop up, just re-focus on the good ones. Then you’ll probably sleep better and wake up in a better space in the morning.
- Morning cup of sunshine: In the morning, wake up and let yourself bask in something positive. It could be the sun shining on a new day, or a well made cup of coffee. It could be even something you did the night before. Just think on that for a few minutes and you will feel the energy in your spirit uplift.
While these two practices are really potent, everybody is different. So, find an exercise that works for you and promise yourself to practice it.
If you need a jump start to practice new thoughts, try pulling out some of the cards from Do Tell: The Relationship Game. Many of the cards were intended for people or players to think about the things that make them feel good.
Do Card: “You are the coach of a sports team. Your team is losing, but could win. Show us what you do.”
Risk Card: “What are you most grateful for in your life? Why?”
Tell Card: “What would be the best compliment anyone could give you?”
And of course, sitting down with friends or family to play the game will certainly give you some new connections and fun experiences to dwell on during your night-time or morning positive thinking practice.
S0, try practicing this week and see how it can make your thought life more of what you need and want it to be.
